116 Clique

We want to give you as much diversity as possible and introduce you to stuff you may never come across. So the following is a review of the 116 clique; 116 are a collection of American rappers who are committed to serving God with their gifts.

This review was written by quest blogger Sam; have a read and a listen and let us know what you think.

116 Clique

116 Clique (reach records) is a Christian hip-hop group consisting primarily of rap artists Lecrae, Trip Lee, Tedashii and Sho Baraka. The group name is taken from Romans 1:16, which reads “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” ‘The Clique’ also operates as a connection between Christians across the globe, according to the Reach Records website which declares, “If you represent Christ in every area of your life no matter what the cost, then you are part of the 116 Clique!”

Discography:

116 released their debut ‘compilation’ album in 2005, and have since gone on to record ‘13 Letters’, an 18-track full-length in which the epistles of Paul are put into hooks and rhymes. An EP titled ‘Amped’, in which the Clique’s songs are remixed with live instruments (to outstanding effect) was released in the same year (2007).

Most 116 Clique members have also released their own solo material, the most notable being Lecrae who has 3 albums to date. The group has toured the USA and also the UK, holding events that aim to reach young people for Jesus through the music.

The Music:

One of the main criticisms sometimes levelled at the modern Contemporary Christian Music industry is the lack of variety and diversity within ‘the genre’. What is interesting about 116 Clique is that they do not stick to a particular type of hip hop or rap, ranging from east coast style to mid west and beyond! Each artist brings something different to the albums – whether it be Tedashii’s deep southern delivery or the diverse lyrical patterns of Trip Lee, there’s something for every rap fan. Unlike most other Christian rappers the 116 manage to keep things flowing and successfully avoid sounding dated or cheesy.

The Message:

Another issue that often comes up with talented musicians within the church is that a number of those on the verge of commercial success are willing to dilute their message in order to appeal to both Christian and mainstream audiences. However, the same cannot be said of the 116 whose vision is not one of record sales and sell-out tours, but that above all the name of Jesus would be glorified. The lyrics are often challenging, calling us to turn away from the old self and fix our eyes on Him. On ’To Live Is Christ’ Trip Lee exhorts: ‘Our life is nothing, but Christ is all, so conduct yourself worthy of His righteous call’.
